Blogs, cobwebs and boats
This is one of the first comments I made in the wonderful and interesting blog, and Patxi Rachel Around the World in 74 days
My comment will be linguistic ... why not. As I mentioned to Patxi and Rachel when I spoke of his intention to open this page for the trip, to me it's blog I hate ... More than anything because I think an ugly word, so simple. And the bat is not understood. And as it turns out that the translation there ... yes, yes, there is, as Ulan Bator Teruel and ... I'm doing a translation proposal.
From what I've researched (which is not much, but good), blog is short for weblog , a word which in turn is composed of web and log. Web
has nothing to do with a web, which is its meaning and primitive, but, of course, with a website.
As regards log, is more complicated. As a verb would result in point, record, record ... with which the translation could be registration website. Indeed web log (eye separately), is translated by Activity Log a website. But this is not the meaning we're looking for right now, and, our word is weblog all together. So, look for more.
The first definition of log such as name, log is , trunk ... obviously, that meant not interest us (the polysemy of English are somewhat mysterious.) The second, however, we are interested: a device that measures the speed of moving a boat through the water (I say: "if a boat is not down", but I swear it's definition The Merriam-Webster Dictionary ). From this meaning, the meanings are given: full record of the voyage of a boat and recording the flight of an aircraft. Hence, as a verb meaning register , point that I said above.
And here's the thing and it gets more interesting: he begins to have something to do with a trip ... by boat or plane. At this point we may now propose, as a translation of log, trip log or, more normal, daily travel ... That combined with web would travel diary website, which is what we are talking about, right?
But, as I have noticed, I too care about the aesthetics and travel diary website I think something long and ugly. So I keep looking and find another interesting word: logbook. Its literal translation, as we have said, would record book a boat trip ... but is that how he is usually in Castilian? Search For an English-Castilian and find ... ta ta chan chan: logbook = logbook.
Now that's beautiful! Blog, word beautiful, fun home (I'll tell you another day), which to me reminds me of pirates travel to the Far East ...
What is your Definicon according to the Royal Academy?
Blog: kind of cabinet, fixed to the deck and immediately at the helm, which put the navigational compass. (Needle dizzy: compass to indicate the direction of a ship).
Come on, if it is also an apparatus of the ship, as log ... They are not exactly the same device: log indicates the direction, speed log, but for the case ...
And what is the class definition logbook?
Logbook: Book that points the direction, speed, drills and other shipping accidents.
is accurate. Look no further. All that remains is that this is not a book is not a logbook is a weblog ... Easy solution: web log. What do you think?
PS: This comment I wrote in June 2004, when he had just learned of what was a blog. I'm glad to see that now the term log normally used to refer to blogs ...
